I saw this today on a site selling fans...
"Never connect an air circulation fan to a fan speed controller. Only use the fans own speed switches to control the fan speed. If an air circulation fan is connected to a fan speed controller designed for in-line duct fans then it will burn out and possibly start a fire."
I've always had my fan on a variac. Why is it alright for the extractor fan be okay but not an in-tent fan?

Re: Circulating fan
Home bargains is where I bought my fans from £15 each. My ground fan sits on a rubber pad and the top fan is suspended like @chad Westport's as this greatly reduces vibration transmition
