Where should i put my freshly germinated seedlings after potting?

Post by Laridae »

I have 3 Northern lights autos in paper towels in a dark and warm cupboard.

When the taproot has developed I will put them into 12 fabric pots filled with Bio bizz allmix organic soil.

My question is.. Where should I put the pots?

Is the dark and warm cupboard suitable until they pop out of the soil? Or, should I put them into the grow tent under the light?

Is light having any affect at this stage?

Is a complete absence of light likely to stunt their development?

Or, is the warm and dark cupboard a good place to keep them until I see them emerge from the soil?

Thanks.

Welcome to GR420,

If your tent is in the house, not in a shed or attic space id put the pots in the tent. I imagine you are talking about an airing cupboard. I've had less germination success when adding warmth. Ambient tents in a house are more than enough for seeds to germinate.

No light until the seeds are above the surface. Darkness until then.

You don't need to soak the pots either with water, overwatering will slow them up.

What light do you have?

It's an airing cupborad, yes. What difference does it make whether the tent is in the house or the attic or shed?

Thanks

Nice light. Its a powerful light fir the watrage used. Start it high above the seeds. Don't try to have it low or you can damage the seedling.

Keep an eye on the pots, the seeds will suddenly pop out and start to stretch. At this point turn the light on. But as mentioned not to close.

If the tent is in a loft or garage etc, the temperatures may drop low or high depending where you are in the world, night, day etc. Extremes in cold or hot may effect your germinating seeds. Your house on the other hand should be fine. You don't want to be adding heat or letting it get to cold.

I find I have a much better success rate germinating seeds if I germinate them separately to the soil/medium and then once they are germinated put them in the medium I'm using. Below is a link to how I germinate.

There seems to be some controversy over whether it's better to plant the seed with the taproot facing upwards or downwards.

I would have planted it taproot down.

Why would you do otherwise? The root is headed down either way surely..?

Thanks.

I've always planted the tap root facing downwards. I can't see why it would be dine the other way.
